چکیده

Abstract The hawksbill sea turtle Eretmochelys imbricata is categorized as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List and its population has declined by over 80% in last century. Eastern Pacific one of most threatened populations globally. Western Mexico northern distribution limit for turtles recent research indicates that Mexican portion a separate management unit because restricted movements these turtles. Here we use complete database sighting records north-west to identify sites where are present. We also develop conservation index determine status sites. Our results demonstrate importance this region juveniles relevance rocky reefs mangrove estuaries habitats identified 52 with Most (71%) not protected; however, high value included islands coastal along Baja California peninsula established marine protected areas. Reefs relevant probably significant fish nursery areas important local fishing communities, creating opportunities strategies combine science, engagement policy benefit both communities conservation.

Conservation of Hawksbill Sea Turtles: Perceptions and Realities

sea turtle species survive in only a limited area of its natural range. Sea turtles must occur throughout their natural ranges to ensure that they fulfill their ecological roles. For example, hawksbills are primary predators in coral reef ecosystems and thus assist in maintaining the biodiversity and ecological processes of these complex ecosystems. Unfortunately, as is made all too clear in th...

Hawksbill sea turtles: can phylogenetics inform harvesting?

In their recent articles, Mortimer et al. (2007) and Bowen et al. (2007) imply that historical declines in hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) populations in the Caribbean together with new phylogenetic data provide solid evidence that hawksbills cannot be harvested on a sustainable level. We suggest that broad inferences on the impacts of harvesting based on phylogenetic data alone a...

The developmental biogeography of hawksbill sea turtles in the North Pacific

High seas oceanic ecosystems are considered important habitat for juvenile sea turtles, yet much remains cryptic about this important life-history period. Recent progress on climate and fishery impacts in these so-called lost years is promising, but the developmental biogeography of hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) has not been widely described in the Pacific Ocean. This knowledge...

Factors Affecting Hatch Success of Hawksbill Sea Turtles on Long Island, Antigua, West Indies

Current understanding of the factors influencing hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) hatch success is disparate and based on relatively short-term studies or limited sample sizes. Because global populations of hawksbills are heavily depleted, evaluating the parameters that impact hatch success is important to their conservation and recovery. Here, we use data collected by the Jumby Ba...

Deforestation: risk of sex ratio distortion in hawksbill sea turtles.

Phenotypic sex in sea turtles is determined by nest incubation temperatures, with warmer temperatures producing females and cooler temperatures producing males. The common finding of highly skewed female-biased hatchling sex ratios in sea turtle populations could have serious repercussions for the long-term survival of these species and prompted us to examine the thermal profile of a relatively...
